Luxury Golf Vacations in Auburn, Alabama
Not enough golfers in the American South know about Alabama’s world-renowned, undeniably gorgeous Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, an 11-city, 26-golf course project that spans all across our beautiful state. One of the most memorable stops on the trail is Grand National, Auburn’s three-course marvel, which rests on 600 acres of prime wilderness surrounding Lake Saugahatchee. Grand National is approximately nine miles northeast of The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center in Downtown Auburn. Combine 54 holes of pristine championship golf with a lavish stay here at one of the premier hotels near Auburn University.
The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail
Even though the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail is considered one of the best golfing bargains in the country, many Southerners are unaware of its existence. “The Trail is some of the best public golf on Earth,” according to The New York Times. In an effort to strengthen several retirement communities located throughout Alabama, Dr. David Bronner manufactured a plan to design, develop, construct, operate, and manage 18 new golf courses – that number eventually rose to 26. Legendary architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr., who has designed more than 500 courses around the world, accepted the challenge to create a diverse, one-of-a-kind golf trail that would trump all others. Included in this plan was Grand National, a 54-hole masterpiece on the edge of Auburn in Opelika.
Grand National - Auburn/Opelika
Robert Trent Jones, Sr. once exclaimed that Grand National’s site was the best he’d ever seen, thanks in large part to Lake Saugahatchee’s jaw-dropping natural surroundings. Jones wanted to create three remarkably diverse Auburn golf courses in one location: “Lake,” “Links,” and “Short Course.” We’re happy to say that he successfully exceeded all expectations! “Lake” aptly hugs Saugahatchee’s shoreline on 12 of the holes, creating a peaceful, serene atmosphere deep in the heart of a lush forest. While “Links” isn’t a true links-style course because of the imposing forestry, Jones utilized the course’s wetlands, rolling hills, and marshes to create a unique yet authentic landscape. We all love squaring up for a scenic tee shot on a challenging par three – enter Grand National’s “Short Course,” a par-54, 18-hole course consisting only of par threes.
